Junior & Youth Ballroom Teams

For Boys & Girls ages 13-18

Our Junior and Youth Ballroom Teams are for boys and girls ages 13-18, divided into different ability levels, beginning through advanced. They meet for two hours, one night a week, and do team routines and syllabus (technique) during that time period. They do fun, local performances and competitions, and our Junior and Youth Ballroom Teams also travel to Utah for a competition in February. During the fall and winter months we have team socials, and for our Utah competition we travel together on our team bus, have pizza, go swimming, etc. We like to have fun as a team, but we also work hard and expect excellence and dedication. Our teams are all national title holders at Gem State National Show Dance Championships, and they do really well with the limited time we have with them in class each week.

Other opportunities for our Jr/Yth Teams: Dancers are invited to be Peer Tutors for our Special Needs Show Team, if they’d like. They’re also invited to audition for our Cabaret (lift) Team, if they’d like. They’re also invited to be understudies for an additional team, if they’d like. More details are under those class descriptions.

***Girls that are new to our studio are required to register with a boy of similar age and ability level. (Ages 13-17 for Jr/Yth Teams, Ages 9-12 for PreTeen Teams). Please specify who you’re registering with on your registration form in the comment section.

***Our returning dancers, and dancers that are new to our studio that have previous ballroom experience, need to come to Team Placement Day in May. Those new to ballroom don’t need to come to Placement Days, we know you’re beginners and will place you accordingly. (If you’re registering later than May please contact me so we can help you get placed onto the correct team, on a space-available basis).

Cabaret (lift) Teams

For Boys & Girls ages 14-18

Our Cabaret (lift) Teams are additional, optional teams for our dancers ages 14-18. They do beautiful lifts and choreography that require strength from the boys as well as the girls. We’re really pleased with both of our 2021-2022 Cabaret Teams, and congratulate them for placing first in their divisions, at both Utah Classic AND at Gem State Classic National Show Dance Competition. We’re really proud of their hard work (and Emily’s amazing coaching!) Our cabaret teams meet one evening a week for a two hour class. During class they work on lifts, choreography, and strength and conditioning. They also have a “movement section” of class where they work on various things like ballet technique, modern/contemporary, yoga, etc., depending on the week. Dancers on our Cabaret Team are required to be in class every week and participate fully. Since this is a formation team with set choreography and with set partners doing lifts together, dancers need to be committed for the full dance season from the end of August through the end of April. These teams are by audition-only, for safety reasons. During auditions we’ll work with the dancers teaching them some simple lifts and spotting techniques so we can see who works well together. Dancers are welcome to register for this team so we know who’s interested in auditioning, then after auditions we’ll email out team lists and adjust Parent Portal accounts.

Our Show Team is for teens and young adults with special needs and peer tutor volunteers. We have a lot of fun and make great friendships! We want all of our dancers to be successful so we work closely with parents to make sure our program is accommodating for the needs of our dancers. Understudy for PreTeen/Junior/Youth Teams

We have a boy and a girl understudy for each of our PreTeen, Jr/Yth, and Cabaret Teams. The understudies dance on their regular team as a full member, then volunteer to be an understudy for an additional team. The understudies attend class every week, learn the syllabus, and learn ALL of the dancers places in the choreography so they can fill in any of the spots. They’re our “back up plan” and if we have a dancer that’s injured or sick for a performance or competition the understudy fills in for them. If no one is injured or sick then the understudy doesn’t perform with that team, but they’ll still get lots of great instruction time and they still perform with their regular team.

Understudies are expected to be at class every week, work hard, and have great attitudes. We appreciate their hard work, and in compensation they have reduced tuition and their costume fee is waived for the team they’re an understudy for. Dancers can register to be an understudy so we know who’s interested, then we’ll assign dancers to teams that will be a good fit for them on a space-available basis.

Performances/competitions:

  • Look at each individual team for performances/competitions for that team.
Monthly fee:
$25/month for boys or girls
Costume fee:
Costume fee is waived for the team they’re an understudy for

Private Lessons

Private lessons can be set up with our ballroom coach (Emily Wood) and scheduled at a time that works best for everyone. Usually these lessons are for dancers desiring to compete Open or Solo Cabaret, but others are also welcome to arrange lessons if they’re desiring some extra help. Open competitors and Solo Cabaret couples that have Emily as their coach arrange regular lessons with her and she sets choreography specifically for them, highlighting their strengths. Emily helps them with their technique, cleans their routines, and works closely with them at the competitions and throughout the year. You can contact the studio for more information.
